About these letter X worksheets
This is cursive X and x in modern cursive: joined lowercase letters with simple capitals. How to write lowercase x: start at the midline. Curve over and down to the right to the baseline and flick out. Lift, and cross it with a line from the top right down to the bottom left. How to write uppercase X: slant down to the right from the top line. Then slant down to the left, crossing the first line.
Lowercase x ends with a flick on the baseline that swings straight up into the next letter, so xxx and words like box are written without lifting the pencil. In the usual teaching order, x is learned with the overcurve letters (n, m, x, y, v, z).
The four worksheets below start with a large chart of X, x and xxx, then give a page each for lowercase x, uppercase X, and joins and words such as box, fox, six, wax, mix and ox.

How to use them
- Start with the chart page. Read the steps aloud while your child traces the big x with a finger, then writes it on the rows below.
- On the lowercase page, trace each single x, then the joined xxx, then write your own on the blank rows.
- Use the uppercase page for X and names like Xavi, Xena and Xia.
- Finish with the words page: the joins, the words box, fox and six, and the sentence “A fox sat in a box.”
Teaching tips for X
- Lowercase x: Start at the midline. Curve over and down to the right to the baseline and flick out. Lift, and cross it with a line from the top right down to the bottom left.
- Uppercase X: Slant down to the right from the top line. Then slant down to the left, crossing the first line.
- Watch for an x crossed in the wrong place. The two lines cross in the middle.
- Print at actual size (100%). The gray letters are solid, so they copy cleanly, and each row has a black model at both ends for left-handed writers.

How do you write a capital X in cursive?
In modern cursive: slant down to the right from the top line. Then slant down to the left, crossing the first line. Capitals don't join to the next letter, so write the X, then start the lowercase letters close by.
