The science year, in order

From matter to living things to Earth’s land and water, in the order many 2nd grade classes teach them. Each strand links to its worksheets.

  1. Matter and its properties

    31 sheets ready

Solids, liquids and gases, a simple particle model, properties of materials, the best material for a job, reversible and irreversible changes, and building with small pieces.

  2. Plants, animals and habitats

    37 sheets ready

How seeds travel, pollination, testing what plants need, and comparing the diversity of life in different habitats.

  3. Earth’s land and water

    23 sheets ready

Landforms and bodies of water, map models, where water is found on Earth, fast and slow Earth changes, and ways to slow erosion.

About science worksheets for 2nd graders

Second grade science turns children into investigators. They squeeze, bend and wet everyday materials to learn their properties, grow bean plants with and without light and water, count the kinds of living things in a garden and on a blacktop, and watch a sand hill wash away in a model rainstorm.

These science worksheets for 2nd graders follow three strands. Matter pages cover solids, liquids and gases, properties of materials, the best material for a job and changes from heating and cooling. Living things pages cover seed dispersal, pollination, what plants need and the diversity of life in different habitats. Earth pages cover landforms, bodies of water, where water is found on Earth, and changes to the land that happen fast or slowly.

Children also design and test solutions: a seed that sticks to fur, a paper seed that spins, and a way to save a house on a sandy hill. Every page is black and white with directions a 2nd grader can read, prints on US Letter or A4, and pages with right answers have an answer key on page 2.

Questions

What science do 2nd graders learn?

Most 2nd grade science covers matter and its properties, including changes from heating and cooling; plants and animals, including seed dispersal, what plants need and habitats; and Earth’s land and water, including landforms, where water is found and how the land changes quickly or slowly.

Do these worksheets need special materials?

Most pages need only a pencil and crayons. Investigations use simple things like a sponge, foil, building blocks, bean seeds, a tray of sand, paper clips and a cup of water.

Can 2nd graders read these pages on their own?

Yes. Directions are short and written for 2nd grade readers, and reading passages are a few short paragraphs. Read aloud for children who need support.

Are there answer keys?

Yes. Every page with right answers has an answer key on page 2. Posters, record sheets for your own tests and design pages have no key.
