About these spelling words for 5th graders worksheets

These spelling words for 5th graders come as 30 weekly lists, one for each week of the school year. Each list has 15 words that all follow the week's pattern, plus 3 challenge words for spellers who are ready for more. Every list prints on its own page with the pattern, a spelling tip and a plan for practicing at home.

5th grade spelling is about how long words are built. Weeks 1 to 8 cover syllable patterns (bo-nus and pan-ic, di-et and cre-ate, con-trast and mush-room), lazy final syllables, ough and augh, Greek spellings with ph, ch and y, and related words whose vowels change (crime and criminal, major and majority). Weeks 9 to 15 are suffixes: -al and -ial, -ic and -ical, -able and -ible, -eous and -uous, -cian and -ian, -sion and -ssion, -ency and -ancy. Weeks 16 to 21 are prefixes, including the ones that hide inside double letters (accompany, collaborate), anti-, counter-, pre-, post-, ex-, extra- and co-. Weeks 22 to 30 cover Greek roots (geo, therm, hydr, chron, astr, photo, gram), Latin roots (tract, duct, mit, vert, cred, voc, terr, aqu, mar), plurals like cacti and larvae, and words English borrowed from other languages.

Every week has the same seven pages: the list, rainbow write, a word sort, missing letters, ABC order, ten fill-in sentences and a test with a dictated sentence, plus a weekly packet with all of them and the answer keys. The master list shows all 450 words on three pages. The spelling bee section adds 120 more words in easy, medium and hard sets, as plain lists, as lists with kid-friendly definitions, and as two-sided flash cards. No word repeats an earlier grade's list, and every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.2.ESpell grade-appropriate words correctly, consulting references as needed.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.5.3.AUse combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.4.BUse common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., photograph, photosynthesis).

How to use them

  1. Monday: send home the list page. It shows the 15 words, the challenge words, a tip for the week's pattern and a checklist for each night.
  2. Tuesday to Thursday: use one or two practice pages a day. Rainbow write and missing letters build the spelling, the sort and ABC order make children look closely at each word, and the sentences page checks meaning.
  3. Friday: give the test. Read each word, say it in a short sentence, then read it again. The teacher page lists the words in a mixed order with a sentence to read aloud.
  4. For a class or school spelling bee, start with the easy list, then add medium and hard. The definitions pages and flash cards let a partner read a meaning while the speller spells the word.

Teaching tips

  • Teach the pattern before the words. Put three list words on the board, ask what they share, then hunt for it in the rest of the list.
  • In the related-words weeks, always say the base word first: nation helps you spell national, and similar becomes easier once you hear similarity.
  • Hidden prefixes explain many double letters. Ad + tach became attach, and con + lect became collect. When a word starts with a double consonant, look for a prefix.
  • In the root weeks, ask what each word has to do with the root's meaning: an aqueduct leads water, and a tractor pulls a plow.
  • Fifteen words too many? Use the first ten. Too easy? Add the three challenge words to the test.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How many spelling words should a 5th grader have each week?

Most 5th grade classes use 15 to 20 words a week. These lists have 15 words that all follow one pattern, plus 3 challenge words. If 15 is too many, use the first 10.

What spelling patterns are taught in 5th grade?

5th graders spell long words by their parts: syllable patterns, suffixes such as -able and -ible or -sion and -ssion, prefixes (including the ones that change to double letters, like ad- in attach), related words like nation and national, and Greek and Latin roots.

Are the spelling bee words from an official bee?

No. They are our own selection of 5th grade level words, grouped by syllables into easy, medium and hard sets, with definitions we wrote for children. None repeats a weekly list or an earlier grade's list.

How do I print the flash cards two-sided?

Print on both sides and flip on the long edge: each back page is laid out so the meanings line up behind their words. Or print one-sided and glue each back page onto its front before cutting.
