A decimal is another way to write tenths and hundredths. 3/10 is 0.3, three tenths. 47/100 is 0.47, forty-seven hundredths. The first place after the decimal point is tenths and the second is hundredths.
On a hundredths grid, one whole is cut into 100 equal squares, and each column of 10 squares is one tenth. That is why 0.5 and 0.50 are the same amount, and why 0.7 is greater than 0.65 even though 65 looks bigger than 7.
These worksheets use exact tenths and hundredths grids, a place value chart and number lines before moving to comparing, ordering and word problems with lengths, liquid volume and money. Every practice page has an answer key.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.C.5Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, and use this technique to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100. For example, express 3/10 as 30/100, and add 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.C.6Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.C.7Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.Tenths and hundredths. They write fractions with denominators 10 and 100 as decimals, compare decimals to hundredths and place them on a number line.
Yes. Five tenths covers the same part of a whole as fifty hundredths.
