About these spelling words for 4th graders worksheets

These spelling words for 4th graders come as 30 weekly lists, one for each week of the school year. Each list has 15 words that all follow the week's pattern, plus 3 challenge words with the same pattern for spellers who are ready for more. Every list prints on its own page with the week number, the pattern, a spelling tip and a plan for practicing at home.

4th grade spelling is about longer words. Weeks 1 to 13 work on syllables and vowel patterns in two- and three-syllable words: closed and open syllables, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, consonant-le, silent letters, ie and ei, the endings -age, -dge and -nge, and que and ch. Weeks 14 to 26 are about word parts: doubling in longer words (beginning, preferred), changing y to i, the prefixes in-, im-, il-, ir-, inter-, trans-, super-, semi-, fore-, mid-, de-, uni-, bi- and tri-, and the suffixes -ous, -ive, -tion, -ance, -ence, -ant, -ent, -ary, -ery, -ory, -ize, -ify and -en. Weeks 27 to 30 cover Greek roots (phon, graph, scope, auto, micro), Latin roots (port, rupt, struct, spect, dict, aud, vis, scrib, ject) and words borrowed from French, Spanish and Italian.

Every week has the same seven pages: the list, rainbow write, a word sort, missing letters, ABC order, ten fill-in sentences and a test with a dictated sentence. The weekly packet puts all seven pages and the answer keys in one PDF. The master list shows all 30 lists on three pages, and the spelling bee pages add 120 more words grouped by syllables: two-syllable, three-syllable, and four or more. Writing lines are 4th grade size, and every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.2.DSpell grade-appropriate words correctly, consulting references as needed.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3.AUse combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.4.BUse common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., telegraph, photograph, autograph).

How to use them

  1. Monday: send home the list page. It shows the 15 words, the challenge words, a tip for the week's pattern and a checklist for each night.
  2. Tuesday to Thursday: use one or two practice pages a day. Rainbow write and missing letters build the spelling, the word sort and ABC order make children look closely at each word, and the sentences page checks meaning.
  3. Friday: give the test. Read each word, say it in a short sentence, then read it again. The teacher page lists the words in a mixed order with a sentence to read aloud.
  4. Use the master list to plan the year, and the spelling bee pages for a class bee, extra practice or early finishers.

Teaching tips

  • Teach the pattern before the words. Put three list words on the board, have children find what they share (the same prefix, suffix or root), then hunt for it in the rest of the list.
  • In the prefix, suffix and root weeks, talk about meaning as well as spelling. A child who knows that semi- means half can spell and understand semicircle, semifinal and semisweet.
  • For the doubling week, have children clap each word and listen for the strong syllable: be-GIN doubles (beginning), VIS-it does not (visited).
  • ABC order in 4th grade often goes past the third letter, especially in prefix weeks (inactive, incomplete, incorrect). Show children how to keep comparing letter by letter.
  • Fifteen words too many? Use the first ten words of the list. Too easy? Add the three challenge words to the test.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How many spelling words should a 4th grader have each week?

Most 4th grade classes use 15 to 20 words a week. These lists have 15 words that all follow one pattern, plus 3 challenge words. If 15 is too many, use the first 10.

What spelling patterns are taught in 4th grade?

4th graders spell longer words by syllables and word parts: vowel patterns in multisyllable words, doubling and changing y to i before endings, prefixes like inter-, trans- and semi-, suffixes like -ous, -tion and -ance, and Greek and Latin roots like graph, phon, port and spect.

Are the spelling bee words from an official bee?

No. The spelling bee pages are our own selection of 4th grade level words, grouped by syllables into easy, medium and hard sets, chosen so none repeats a weekly list or an earlier grade's list.

Do the worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. The sort, missing letters, ABC order and sentences pages have an answer key on page 2, and the test has a teacher page with the words to read aloud.
