About these dividing decimals worksheets

To divide a decimal by a whole number, put the decimal point in the answer straight above the point in the number you divide, then divide as usual. 8.64 ÷ 4 = 2.16. When digits run out before the division is finished, write a zero on the end and keep going: 7.8 is the same as 7.80.

To divide by a decimal, make the divisor a whole number first. Multiply both numbers by the same power of 10: 2.4 ÷ 0.06 is the same as 240 ÷ 6 = 40. A number line shows the meaning: 2 ÷ 0.5 asks how many jumps of 0.5 fit in 2.

These pages start with a worked example, then long division with decimals by 1-digit and 2-digit numbers, writing zeros, dividing by decimals, mental math and word problems. The answer keys show every step of the long division.

Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.2Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

How to use them

  1. Start with How to Divide Decimals and the point-up-first rule.
  2. Practice 1-digit divisors, then the pages where a zero must be written on.
  3. Use the number line page before Dividing by Decimals, so moving the point makes sense.
  4. Finish with the mental math page and word problems.

Teaching tips

  • Put the point up first, before any digits of the answer.
  • If the divisor does not go into the first digit, write 0 above it: 2.4 ÷ 6 = 0.4.
  • Move the point in both numbers the same number of places.
  • Dividing by a number less than 1 gives a bigger answer: 3 ÷ 0.5 = 6.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How do you divide a decimal by a whole number?

Write the decimal point in the quotient directly above the point in the dividend, then divide as with whole numbers.

How do you divide by a decimal?

Multiply the divisor and the dividend by 10 or 100 so the divisor becomes a whole number, then divide. 4.5 ÷ 0.9 = 45 ÷ 9 = 5.

What if the division does not come out even?

Write zeros on the end of the dividend and keep dividing. 7.8 ÷ 4 = 7.80 ÷ 4 = 1.95.
