About these measurement conversion worksheets

To convert a measurement to a smaller unit, multiply by how many small units make one big unit. 1 foot is 12 inches, so a 4 foot snake is 4 × 12 = 48 inches long. 1 kilogram is 1,000 grams, so 3 kilograms is 3,000 grams.

Customary units: 1 ft = 12 in, 1 yd = 3 ft, 1 mi = 5,280 ft, 1 lb = 16 oz, 1 gal = 4 qt, 1 qt = 2 pt, 1 pt = 2 c. Metric units: 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 km = 1,000 m, 1 kg = 1,000 g, 1 L = 1,000 mL. Time: 1 min = 60 sec, 1 hr = 60 min, 1 day = 24 hr.

These worksheets start with the conversion chart and two-column tables, then convert each kind of unit, change mixed units like 3 ft 5 in to inches, compare measurements and solve word problems. Every practice page has an answer key.

Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.1Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ...
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.2Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

How to use them

  1. Give children the Measurement Conversion Chart to keep.
  2. Use the conversion tables to see the multiplying pattern.
  3. Practice each kind of unit, then mixed units.
  4. Finish with Compare Measurements and the word problems.

Teaching tips

  • Changing to a smaller unit gives a bigger number.
  • For 3 ft 5 in, change the feet first (36 in), then add the 5 inches.
  • Use benchmarks: a meter is a little longer than a yard.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How many feet are in a mile?

5,280 feet, which is 1,760 yards.

How many cups are in a gallon?

16 cups: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups.

How do you convert meters to centimeters?

Multiply by 100, because 1 meter is 100 centimeters. 3 m = 300 cm.
