About these morning work for 5th graders worksheets

Morning work is a short page children can start on their own while the day gets going. Each of these 80 pages takes about 10 to 15 minutes and mixes a few quick skills with one word problem.

The weeks follow the 5th grade year: weeks 1 to 4 review place value, powers of 10 and decimals; weeks 5 to 8 practice multi-digit multiplication, long division with 2-digit divisors and expressions with brackets; weeks 9 to 12 add, subtract and multiply decimals; and weeks 13 to 16 divide decimals and review factors and exponents.

Every page has an answer key on page 2, so children can check their own work or a helper can mark it quickly.

Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.2Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.5Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.6Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.OA.A.1Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.

How to use them

  2. Go over the word problem together at the end of morning work.
  3. Use the key to spot skills that need a full practice page.

Teaching tips

  • Let children skip a part and come back to it, so one hard item does not stop the whole page.
  • Ask for an estimate on decimal problems before the exact answer.
