About these solar system worksheets

Our solar system is the sun and everything that travels around it: eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets like Pluto, the asteroid belt and comets. The four inner planets are small and rocky; the four outer planets are giants made mostly of gas and ice.

These solar system worksheets include a labeled diagram, a blank diagram with a word bank and a cut and paste version, plus planets in order to cut and paste or number. Planet fact cards, a planet sizes to scale page and a data table of distances and year lengths build real understanding, along with riddles, an inner or outer sort, a Pluto reading passage, vocabulary and a quiz.

Every page is black and white, prints on US Letter or A4, and every page with right answers has an answer key on page 2.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.7Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.3Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.4Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area.
  • NGSS 5-PS2-1Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down.

How to use them

  1. Teach the order with the memory sentence: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos.
  2. Use the labeled diagram, then the blank or cut and paste version.
  3. Compare the to-scale sizes page with the diagram, which is not to scale.
  4. Finish with the Pluto passage and the quiz.

Teaching tips

  • The diagram is not to scale; the sizes page is. If Earth were a pea, Jupiter would be about the size of a grape and the sun would be bigger than a beach ball.
  • Venus is hotter than Mercury because its thick clouds trap heat.
  • Moon counts change as astronomers find more, so the cards avoid exact counts for the giant planets.
  • Pluto became a dwarf planet in 2006 because it shares its orbit with many other icy objects.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are the planets in order from the sun?

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. A memory sentence: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos.

Why is Pluto not a planet?

In 2006 astronomers agreed a planet must travel around the sun, be round, and have cleared its path. Pluto shares its path with other Kuiper Belt objects, so it is a dwarf planet.

Is there a blank solar system diagram?

Yes. There is a blank diagram with a word bank and a cut and paste version, both with answer keys.
