About spelling and vocabulary for 4th graders
In 4th grade, word study is about long words and what their parts mean. Children spell words by syllables and word parts (interrupt, semicircle, famous, invention), learn Greek and Latin roots that unlock whole families of words (telescope, transport, inspect), sort out commonly confused words in their own writing (their, there, they're; then, than; affect, effect), and use dictionaries and thesauruses to check pronunciation, meaning and the best word for a sentence.
These spelling and vocabulary worksheets for 4th graders cover all of it. The 30 weekly spelling lists come with seven practice pages each, a weekly packet, a master list and spelling bee words grouped by syllables. The 40 vocabulary words have a list, word cards and practice pages, and the word study pages teach Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes, homophones, commonly confused words, synonyms and antonyms, and dictionary and thesaurus skills.
Writing lines are 4th grade size, directions are written for children to read on their own, and every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4. Pages with right answers have an answer key on page 2, and each cut and paste page has a no-cut twin.
Questions
What spelling skills are taught in 4th grade?
4th graders spell longer words by syllables and word parts: vowel patterns in multisyllable words, doubling and changing y to i before endings, prefixes and suffixes like inter-, semi-, -ous and -tion, and Greek and Latin roots. They also check spellings in a dictionary.
How many spelling words should a 4th grader learn each week?
Usually 15 to 20. Our weekly lists have 15 pattern words plus 3 challenge words.
Why do 4th graders learn Greek and Latin roots?
Roots carry meaning across many words. A child who knows that port means carry and spect means look can work out transport, portable, inspect and spectator, and spell them more easily.
Are these worksheets free?
Yes. Every worksheet is a free PDF with no sign-up, ready to print at home or school.
