About reading worksheets for 2nd graders

Second grade is the year children read to learn as well as learn to read. They read longer stories and nonfiction on their own, describe how characters respond to problems, find the main topic of a text and what each paragraph is about, compare two texts and use clues to work out new words.

These reading worksheets for 2nd graders follow that path. Leveled reading comprehension passages grow from 120-word texts to full pages, and original short stories and fables give children longer reads with questions about characters, lessons and structure. Nonfiction pages teach main idea, cause and effect, text features and author's purpose. Compare and contrast pages use Venn diagrams and paired texts, and context clues pages build the habit of figuring out new words.

Every passage and story is original. Pages print in black and white on US Letter or A4, and every page with right answers has an answer key.

Questions

What should a second grader be able to read?

By the end of second grade, most children read stories and nonfiction of a page or more on their own, retell them, describe characters, find the main topic and use clues to work out new words.

How do I choose a reading level?

Start with a Level 1 passage. If your child reads it smoothly and answers most questions, move up. If the reading is slow and choppy, stay at that level a little longer.

Are these passages original?

Yes. Every passage, story, fable and poem was written for this site, and all of them are free to print.

Do the worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. Every page with right answers has an answer key. Written answers show an example.
