About these good citizen worksheets

A citizen is a member of a community. Good citizens are honest, kind, fair, respectful and responsible, and they help take care of the places they share. First graders practice these ideas every day at school.

These good citizen worksheets give children the words for good citizenship and lots of practice using them. A poster names each trait with a picture, picture sorts show good choices and poor ones, and short stories ask what a good citizen would do. Children read about a girl who cleans up a park and returns a lost hat.

A class vote page shows a fair way for a group to decide. A weekly chart and a certificate help you notice good citizens in your own class. Pages print on US Letter or A4, and pages with right answers have an answer key on page 2.

  3. Hold a real class vote, then use the class vote page to practice tally marks and graphs.

Teaching tips

  • Be specific when you praise: “You held the door for the class. That was helpful.”
  • Good citizens make mistakes too. Telling the truth about a mistake is part of being honest.
  • Talk about citizens at school, at home and in the community, so children see that everyone has a part to play.
  • Voting gives everyone one vote. Talk about how the group can be fair to the children whose choice did not win.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What does it mean to be a good citizen in 1st grade?

It means being honest, kind, fair, respectful and responsible, following rules that keep people safe, helping others and taking care of shared places like the classroom and the park.

How do I use the good citizen award?

Write the child’s name and the specific thing they did, then sign and date it. Children value the award most when the reason is clear.

Are there answer keys?

Yes. Every page with right answers has an answer key on page 2. The chart, the award and the drawing page have no key.
