About phonics worksheets for 1st graders

1st grade is the big phonics year. Children who start the year reading short words like cat and ship finish it reading words like rainbow, jumped and corner. They learn blends (frog, hand), silent e (cake, kite), vowel teams (rain, tree, boat), r-controlled vowels (car, bird) and endings like -ed and -ing, and they start breaking longer words into syllables.

These phonics worksheets for 1st graders follow that order. Each pattern has a chart and a word list, then sorts, fill-ins, pick-the-word pages, sentences and a short story, so children move from hearing the pattern to reading it in real text. The 30 weekly spelling lists practice the same patterns week by week, and the 50 sight words cover the common words that don't follow the rules.

Writing lines are 1st grade size, every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4, and every page with right answers has an answer key on page 2. Each cut and paste page has a no-cut twin.

Questions

What phonics skills are taught in 1st grade?

1st graders learn consonant blends and digraphs, long vowels with silent e and vowel teams, r-controlled vowels like ar and or, endings like -s, -ed and -ing, and how to read two-syllable words. They also learn to read common irregular words by sight.

In what order should I teach 1st grade phonics?

A common order is short vowel review, digraphs, blends, silent e, long vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, other vowel teams like oo, ou and oi, then endings and two-syllable words. The strands on this page and the 30 spelling lists follow that order.

How do the spelling lists connect to the phonics pages?

Each week's spelling list practices one phonics pattern, the same patterns covered by the topic pages. When you teach silent e, for example, use the silent e worksheets for reading and the silent e spelling weeks for writing.
