About reading worksheets for 1st graders

First grade is the year children become readers. They move from sounding out single words to reading short stories and nonfiction on their own, and from listening to stories to talking about characters, events, main ideas and the lessons stories teach.

These reading worksheets for 1st graders follow that path. Leveled reading comprehension passages grow from 50-word stories to full pages of text, and original short stories give children longer reads with questions. Story skill pages cover sequencing, characters and setting and cause and effect. Nonfiction pages teach main idea and details, text features and how fiction and nonfiction differ.

Every passage and story is original. Pages print in black and white on US Letter or A4, and every page with right answers has an answer key.

Questions

What should a first grader be able to read?

By the end of first grade, most children read short stories and simple nonfiction on their own, retell them with key details, describe characters and settings, and name the main topic of a nonfiction text.

How do I know which reading level to use?

Start with Level 1 passages. If your child reads the passage smoothly and answers most questions, move up. If the reading is slow and choppy, stay at that level a little longer.

Are these reading passages original?

Yes. Every passage, story and poem was written for this site, and all of them are free to print.

Do the worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. Every page with one right answer has an answer key. Writing answers show an example.
