About reading worksheets for 4th graders
Fourth grade readers take on longer texts: stories of several pages with characters who change, nonfiction with headings and fact boxes, and poems with stanzas, rhythm and meter. They now explain what a text says and what it suggests, using details and examples as evidence, summarize what they read, describe how a text is organized, and compare a firsthand account with a secondhand one.
These reading worksheets for 4th graders follow that path. Original reading comprehension passages come in three levels of fiction, nonfiction and poetry, and science and social studies reading passages include paired texts. Skill pages teach summarizing, text structure, theme, point of view, main idea and context clues, and figurative language pages explain idioms, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia and alliteration with examples.
Every passage, story and poem was written for this site. Pages print in black and white on US Letter or A4, and every page with right answers has an answer key.
Questions
What should a 4th grader be able to read?
By the end of fourth grade, most children read chapter books and nonfiction of several pages on their own. They summarize a text, find its theme or main idea, explain how it is organized, and back up their answers with details and examples from the text.
How do I choose a reading level?
Start with a Level 1 passage. If your child reads it smoothly and answers most questions correctly, move up a level.
Are these passages original?
Yes. Every passage, story and poem was written for this site, and all of them are free to print.
Do the worksheets have answer keys?
Yes. Every page with right answers has an answer key. Written answers show an example.
